Kay Meyer

Overall dimensions: 60X14X2
Medium: Wool, sourced mainly from Montana and Wyoming, pvc pipe with a wire hanger.
Artist's Statement: Gardens can be grown in straight rows, in boxes, or planted against fence lines. But at the Bloomery, flowers grow without knowing the restraint of rows, borders, or pre-drawn plans. Blooms unfurl fully without a plan or maintenance. And once a flower blooms there is only the promise of seeds for next year’s blossoms.

Form 5
Scott Mossman

State: Illinois

Dimensions: 15 x 9.5 x 9
Year created: 2021
Overall dimensions: This sculpture should be hanged high above - roughly 10 feet or more with a nice spotlight for shadows
Medium: Acrylic on Wood
Artist's Statement: Mossman's decidedly post-minimalist sculpture deals with relationships - formal and contextual. His architecturally-influenced forms, flavored by trips to Asia (China, Japan, and Tibet) and Europe as well as a passion for pre-gothic and early modernist forms (among them Corbusier, Loos, and Wright) comment on the creation and purpose of sculpture and its relationship to architectural forms in a space and other objects (security alarms, hand dryers, heating, and cooling units) that inhabit a space. They walk a thin line between the utilitarian and the purely abstract.

Iowa Landscape
Paul Rung

State: Iowa

Dimensions: 63.5 x 30.5 x 2
Year created: 2021
Overall dimensions: 63.5" x 30.5"
Medium: Painted metal, distressed copper, steel, brass, found objects, photography
Artist's Statement: These Murals are an interpretation of the northeastern Iowa landscape. Creating murals started started when I lived in northern Illinois about ten years ago. Illinois was quite different from the rolling hills, cliffs, meandering streams and rivers where I live now. The new Iowa murals have acquired a more three dimensional quality incorporating found objects along with metal, copper, paint and photography. I have found the northeast Iowa landscape to be far more varied, more abrupt and textured. Hills, wooded areas and rocky cliffs interrupting light and color with shadows and walls.

Axion Clouds #23
Michele Thrane

State: IL

Dimensions: 23 x 35 x 2
Year created: 2023
Overall dimensions: 23"x35"x2"
Medium: Cut encaustic monotypes ‘stitched’ together with staples, screwed to a strip of wood
Artist's Statement: My work is abstract and begins with encaustic monotypes. After creating the monotypes, I cut them into small pieces and using encaustic medium put a backing on them. The puzzle-like pieces are then reconfigured, and ‘stitched’ together with staples, resulting in a paper sculpture that is screwed to wooden strips and hangs off the wall. I often feel that my works tells a story to which the viewer contributes.

Lauren Venable
Second Place
State: Wisconsin

Dimensions: 70 x 42
Year created: 2022
Overall dimensions: 70" by 42"
Medium: charcoal on paper
Artist's Statement: I met my girlfriend when I was not looking for love but it found me. Rather, she found me. In this piece I explore vulnerability. The bed is a personal place of comfort which you choose to share. I depict my girlfriend and I in a bed, sharing this space, exemplifying the scary, yet exciting process of getting to know someone intimately. Knowing what they fear and what makes their eyes light up. This two way process means that you also have to be ready to share a part of yourself. This bed represents us revealing and concealing parts of ourselves as we open up to one another.
Avatar 8 – Stoneman
Avatar 8 – Stoneman
Kathy Weaver

State: IL

Dimensions: 40 x 14
Year created: 2021
Overall dimensions: See above dimensions
Medium: gouache on handmade paper
Artist's Statement: Kathy Weaver’s latest paintings are a series of figures titled “Avatars”, gouache on handmade Twinrocker paper, 40” x 14”. The intent of the Avatar series is to focus attention on particular behaviors exhibited around us in this time of racial inequality, cultural upheaval, climate change, pandemic, and the deepening economic divide. Weaver uses the tall, narrow format to emphasize the corporality of the figure. These characters are ready to act, challenge, persevere. In true Avatar fashion, they possess the different emotional and behavioral qualities humans project to the world.
