ARTIST ELIGIBILITY

The exhibition is open to artists 18 years of age or older residing within a 200 mile radius of Dubuque, Iowa (52001).

ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS

Original works of art only. Reproductions, including gicleé prints of original works, will not be judged. All submitted works must have been completed since 2021 (2021, 2022, or 2023). All works must be installation-ready with hanging hardware securely attached, as applicable. Works cannot be larger than 84 inches in any one direction. Wall mounted works are limited to 100 pounds. All submitted artwork must be in the artist's possession and available for the full exhibition period.

AGREEMENT

At the discretion of the Museum, any entries that do not meet the Artist Eligibility or Artwork Specifications criteria may not be judged or admitted to the exhibition. Submission to this competitive exhibition constitutes agreement on the part of the artist to all the conditions set forth in this prospectus.

AWARDS

Best in show: $1200. Second place: $600. Third place: $300.
The juror also has the option of awarding Honorable Mention recognitions. Purchase awards and exhibition opportunities are some of the additional benefits possible for artists whose work is selected.

SUBMISSION FEE

The non-refundable submission fee is $40 for submitting up to three (3) works. Additional works, up to 15 total, may be added to an application for a fee of $10 per work.
Entry fee is payable online by credit card. You may request to pay by check or cash by contacting the Dubuque Museum of Art at info@dbqart.org.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Founded in 2003, the DuMA Biennial is a highly-competitive, juried exhibition highlighting leading contemporary, regional artists who are actively producing and presenting new work. Previous jurors were Laura Burkhalter, Curator, Des Moines Art Center; Sarah Humphreville, Senior Curatorial Assistant, Whitney Museum of American Art; Amanda Burdan, Curator, Brandywine River Museum of Art; Jane Milosch, Director of the Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative, Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture; Jim Welu, Director Emeritus, Worcester Art Museum; Frank Paluch, Perimeter Gallery; Michael Gerber, Gruen Galleries; Alan Z. Aiches, Aiches Design; and Olukemi Ilesanmi, Curatorial Assistant, Walker Art Center.

ABOUT THE DUBUQUE MUSEUM OF ART

The Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA), founded in 1874 and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2004, is among Iowa’s oldest cultural institutions. DELIVERY SCHEDULE

Artists are responsible for transporting their work to and from the Museum. Accepted work must be delivered to the Museum between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, June 5-9, 2023. Shipped work must be timed to arrive during this stated delivery schedule. The Museum is not responsible for artwork in transit. All accepted works must remain at the museum for the duration of the exhibition. 

SHIPPING: Shipped works must be timed to arrive during the stated delivery schedule. Please purchase a pre-paid return shipping label when you ship your artwork and include it with the artwork. Please ship all works to DUBUQUE MUSEUM OF ART, ATTN: STACY PETERSON, 701 LOCUST ST, DUBUQUE, IA 52001 (563)557-1851. Containers should be sturdy and reusable with appropriate return shipping instructions. It is recommended that artists double box their works for shipping.

After the exhibition closes, works must be picked up October 9-11, 2023 between the same hours listed. Shipped works will be returned in their same shipping containers.

INSURANCE, PUBLICITY, SALES

While on premises, the Museum will insure work for the value given by the artist. The Museum reserves the right to photograph and/or reproduce digital images of work for any related or educational purpose. The Museum is not a sales venue. Parties interested in purchasing work will be directed to the artist involved.

In preparation for submitting your work to the DuMA Biennial, please note that the following information will be on the application:

  1. Dropdown menu where you can select a category for the work, at your discretion.
  2. Title of the work.
  3. 1st set of dimension fields (in inches) are for the dimension of the work itself (no mat, frame, or separate base added). For no dimensions, enter 0's.
  4. Weight of the work in pounds. For no weight, enter 0.
  5. Optional: a link to a web resource for the work.
  6. Medium of the work.
  7. 2nd dimension fields (in inches) are for the overall dimension of the work when installed. For example, this could be the framed dimension or include an exhibition base that comes with the work. Repeat the 1st dimensions here if there is no difference.
  8. Year the work was created (2021, 2022, or 2023).
  9. Optional, artist's statement.

IMAGES: Each submitted work can have up to 3 images, so that you can include a main image and two images for details or alternate views as needed.

You can submit up to 3 works for the entry fee. If you want to submit more than 3 works (up to 15), there is an additional fee of $10 per work.
