Dimensions: 24 x 18 x 1 Year created: 2023 Overall dimensions: 24 x 18 x 1 Medium: Acrylic and mixed media on wood panel Artist's Statement: During the pandemic I have shifted my focus from watercolor to acrylic and mixed media. Dimensions: 18 x 12 x 7 Year created: 2022 Overall dimensions: Variable Dimensions Medium: Stoneware, Vitreous Engobe, Underglaze Artist's Statement: The vessel-like structures that are formed become more enhanced or dilapidated through simulation with multiple glaze applications as surfaces begin to either gain or lose information and represent themes of burial, excavation, decay and chemical processes that occur within a landfill. This new experimental way of building allows me more freedom to explore and continue to contribute as well as push the boundaries of the contemporary ceramic visual language that the work embodies.

Tangled Heart
Judy Bales
State: IA
Dimensions: 25 x 16 x 17 Year created: 2022 Overall dimensions: 25 " x 16" x 17" Medium: Fabric wrapping on found wire Artist's Statement: I construct surfaces or forms that reflect and emulate the beauty and mystery of nature or natural phenomena, akin to the idea of biomimicry. I love nature’s precise order which combines with its captivating dishevelment (think tangled vines or water rushing over jagged rocks). Observations of this energy and freedom direct my creative process.
For this work, I wrapped wire fencing with cloth, a systematic process which I then altered by expressive crushing and crinkling, finally painting multiple layers of acrylics and finally scumbling the surface to create a bark-like appearance.

Dimensions: 3 x 3 x 2 Year created: 2023 Overall dimensions: 3x3x2 inches Medium: Porcelain vessel Smoke Fired on Hach Hill 3” diameter x 2” high Artist's Statement: These works are touchpoints in history from my family and place. I perform smokefirings on ancestral lands which hold fossils formed in seas that covered it millions of years ago, rocks left untouched by subsequent glaciers. In these firings I collaborate with fire which records its traces on clay. The process references the impact of fire in my family’s history as well as the force of nature’s elements which we only control to some degree. This place has a complex history, and that of my family is only one of the stories that could be told. My works engage multiplicity.
