Statement
I create figurative clay sculptures that are narrative in nature and visually represent common issues we all grapple with i.e. creating a meaning ful life, dealing with loss and pain, celebratomg love and accomplishments, getting through rough spots, etc. My goal is to capture common themes between all of us that link us together,
The body is often divided in sections with color, script, painterly brushstrples. scratching on the surface texture and sometimes symbols aor graphics to help support the story. Many of the sculptures have a line down the middle symbolizing the conflict within each person. While the line divides the textures, color and designs on the surface of the sculptures show the struggle to harmonize the differences between the two sides.
While the sculptures are done in a realistic style, the poses and proportions are not. Taking creative liberties I often exaggerate body proportions i.e., extra-long legs or oversized hands, and/or sometimes under emphasize other parts, like smaller head or feet.
The surfaces of my pieces are not standard. Whatever surface I choose for the piece is based on the story I am trying to tell. Each piece is hand built using slabs or coils; shaping, altering and incising the surface. The surface is a mixture of glazing techniques using drawing, designs and color. They are added in layers between several firings. Oxides are used in the final firing to bring depth and texture to the surface.
