Doug Fath

Doug Fath is primarily a painter who resides in Madison Wisconsin. After receiving his MFA from University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992 he moved to Wisconsin. His work has evolved throughout the years working in photography, installation work, drawings and paintings.
Recent work investigates pain and difficult life situations through representation and allegory. Influenced by artist such as Frida Kahlo, Fath uses color to create mood and emotive qualities. Creating work to heal, to help survive, Art elicits emotion and therefore can help us relate to one another.

Statement

My work in the last couple of years has been about dealing with isolation, disruption, societal woes and personal loss. Painting and drawing in a free form surrealist style I see my work as visual poems that attempt to decode questions about what myself and people are going through. I started painting everyday during the first wave of the COVID pandemic. Losing both of my parents during this period my work began heavily focused on grief. I realized the mode of painting I adopted became a tool to address the multitude of issues we all face. My paintings address  loss, grief, environmental concerns, political extremism forced on us and the effects all of these issues have on us. My work draws on using color in bold psychological ways. Influences draw on folk art, Mexican surrealism, and Haiku poetry.
